Lakers looking to take down Spurs before playoffs begin

April 21st, 2012

Preview: L.A. Lakers At San Antonio
When: 9:30 PM ET, Friday, April 20, 2012
Where: AT&T Center, San Antonio, Texas

Kobe Bryant is expected to return to the lineup when the Los Angeles Lakers visit the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night. Bryant has missed seven straight games with a left shin injury and sat out both matchups between the Lakers and Spurs, who took turns slapping each other around in the past 10 days. The Spurs lead Oklahoma City by a half-game for top seed in the West, while the Lakers are one ahead of the Clippers atop the Pacific.

We still have Spurs Vs Lakers Tickets available for tonight.

Los Angeles has gone 5-2 without Bryant, including a 98-84 drubbing of the Spurs in San Antonio on April 11. The Lakers have leaned on their inside duo of center Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol in Bryant’s absence. Bynum has averaged 23.1 points and 14.1 rebounds in the last seven games, including a monster performance at San Antonio when he yanked down a career-high 30 rebounds. Gasol registered five double-doubles during that span, averaging 21.1 points and 10.1 boards.

San Antonio has ripped off a five-game winning streak since the home loss to the Lakers. The Spurs got some big payback with a 120-91 romp in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. That was the middle game of a back-to-back-to-back through the state of California in which the Spurs posted a hefty victory margin of 22.3 points per game. Easily the league’s deepest team, San Antonio’s bench has averaged 62.3 points in its last three victories.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Spurs have the best home record (25-5) in the West, but the Lakers have won their last two visits to San Antonio.

2. Bryant’s seven-game absence is his longest since sitting out 14 games in 2005.

3. The Spurs are averaging 114.2 points during their five-game winning streak.

PREDICTION: Spurs 107, Lakers 105.

SPURS 112, LAKERS 91: Tony Parker had 29 points and 13 assists to lead visiting San Antonio to an easy victory over Los Angeles, and a half-game ahead of idle Oklahoma City atop the Western Conference.

Down 41-39, the Spurs (44-16) used an 18-0 run midway through the second quarter for a 57-41 lead and went into halftime ahead 63-47. From there, the Spurs used their deep bench and never let the Lakers make a run.

The Lakers (39-23) played their sixth consecutive game without Kobe Bryant, who is still nursing a sore left shin.

Tim Duncan had 19 points and eight rebounds and Manu Ginobili scored 15 for the Spurs, who have won 15 of their last 17 games.

Mark Mireles

We would like to welcome Mark Mireles to our website.

For me I was basically born into loving sports, since 6 years old playing Tee Ball,
I have been involved in sports my whole life. I consider myself more than just a little bit knowledgeable about the
NHL, NFL and MLB.

I have been to a Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup Final and one NHL All-Star game

I eat, dream, and sweat “sports” in general, every “favorite” channel saved on my tv has some sort of ESPN in front of it.

I have played basketball my whole life but at an early age I relazied I had no shot at going pro, so as they say those who cannot do “write” icon smile Mark Mireles

Soooo Mark Mireles will the Spurs Win the Championship in 2012?
They are now healthier, stronger and the bench has gotten even deeper at the trade deadline. Of course they are still anchored by the ageing trio of basketball geniuses in Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. But this year the trio is better rested, thanks to the addition of the likes of Stephen Jackson and Boris Diaw, and the blossoming of the games of Tiago Splitter, DeJuan Blaire and everybody else. Even the performances from Danny Greene, Kawhi Leonard and Gary Neil makes them look like starter from other playoff-bound teams.

The template for the Spurs is so simple, so old-school, so disciplined that it also becomes so hard to copy with this generation of basketball superstars. Their game is anchored by a strict code of defensive responsibility, poise, teamwork and toughness.

I would dare say that the Spurs is, offensively the most well-balanced in the NBA. Night in and night out, the box score would show 5 to 6 guys in double figures. Aside from Duncan and Parker, nobody would know which other guys would contribute much in scoring. Defesively, their front court is as good as any in the league and their guards are feisty defenders who can easily convert steals to fastbreak points.

Tim Duncan is already considering retirement, but he, along with Manu Ginobili want one more ring. Younger members of the roster like Leonard and Green are also hungry for a championship. This makes a lethal combination of seasoned veterans and brilliant newcomers complimenting each other.

They are that good, and they know it. But Greg Popovich would always say they are taking one game at a time. No premature talks of multiple championships. They have, what the coach calls, ‘appropriate fear’. And that makes them even better.

Thanks Mark Mireles for your insight and thank you very much for helping us out with recaps and previews of Spurs Games.

Mark Mireles will also be hosting a contest for us to give away tickets to a spurs game very soon if you can beat him in Spurs Trivia.

Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan

Eleven games into the 2010–11 season, Duncan became the Spurs’ all-time leader in points scored and games played.Along the way, the Spurs compiled a 12-game winning streak to go 13–2 after 15 games. On November 30, 2010, Duncan recorded his third career triple-double against the Golden State Warriors. 12 days later, in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers, Duncan became the 94th player in NBA history to play 1000 games. Through his 1000th game, the Spurs have been 707–293; only Scottie Pippen (715–285) had a better record with his team through his first 1000 games. The Spurs were 29–4 after 33 games—one of the ten best starts in NBA history[72]–and led the league at 35–6 halfway through the season.Although Duncan produced career-lows in points and rebounds per game, the Spurs ended the regular season as the first seed in the West for the 2011 NBA Playoffs, and were second in the league (to Chicago). Despite finishing with a 61–21 record, however, the Spurs could not avoid being upset in the first round, 4–2, by the eighth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies.

Tony Parker

April 10th, 2012
tony parker 154x300 Tony Parker

Tony Parker

Parker plays the point guard position and has established himself as a potent scorer. Voted by his peers in a 2007 poll as one of the quickest players in the NBA,[44] he often slashes to the basket for a layup or teardrop shot. Despite his relatively small size for a basketball player (6’2″), he led the league in “points in the paint” for a large portion of the 2005–06 season.

In the initial part of his NBA career, Parker was still considered an erratic shooter of the ball and during the 2005 off-season, coach Popovich decided to work on this aspect of his play. Seeing his mediocre shooting percentages (at that point, Parker only hit 65% of his free throws, and only 27.6% of his three point shots), he let him train extra sessions with Spurs shooting coach Chip Engelland.

Engelland forbade Parker to shoot any three point shots, and among others, corrected his shooting motion and his thumb position. As a result, by the 2006–07 season, Parker had reduced his three point shots by 117 while shooting 147 more normal field goal attempts compared to 2005, and his accuracy rose by 4% (field goals and three point shots) and he was able to connect on 78% of his free throws that season. Parker’s field goal percentage is also high for a point guard, and his speed also makes him a fast break player. However, his style of play has had adverse effects on his knees (tendinitis).

Spurs look to silence the Jazz

April 10th, 2012

Preview: San Antonio At Utah
When: 9:00 PM ET, Monday, April 9, 2012
Where: Energy Solutions Arena, Salt Lake City, Utah

Spurs Vs Jazz Tickets are still available for tonight’s matchup.

THE STORY: San Antonio can win its 12th consecutive game when it completes a home-and-home series with Utah in Salt Lake City on Monday. More important for the Spurs (40-14) is increasing their edge over Oklahoma City (41-15) atop the West. The Spurs took advantage of a short-handed Utah squad for a 114-104 victory Sunday in San Antonio. Utah lost shooting guard C.J. Miles (strained calf) and Earl Watson (sore right knee) in the second quarter.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Spurs), ROOT Sports (Jazz)

ABOUT THE SPURS (40-14): San Antonio managed to handle Utah despite not even playing starting center DeJuan Blair and backup guard Stephen Jackson. Manu Ginobili scored 23 points and had five rebounds in his best game since coming back from a broken hand in March. Ginobili was 14 of 15 from the line but said after the game he wasn’t sure he would make the trip to Utah. The Spurs have beaten Utah six straight times.

ABOUT THE JAZZ (29-28): Utah came out of Sunday’s game with not only a loss but perhaps a depleted backcourt. Miles had his left foot in a protective boot after the game. Watson was on crutches. “We just have to pick it up. … We’re just going to have to go with what we have,” Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. “Our guys have been tremendous responding all year and we expect that to continue.” Utah is 1½ games behind eighth-place Denver Nuggets.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Spurs last won 12 in a row from Nov. 1-24, 2010.

2. Utah has allowed 30-plus points in the first quarter in five of six games.

3. After not playing the first half, Utah’s DeMarre Carroll scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3 of 4 on 3-pointers.

PREDICTION: Spurs 114, Jazz 101

Spurs looking to add to their winning streak

April 3rd, 2012

Preview: San Antonio At Cleveland
When: 7:00 PM ET, Tuesday, April 3, 2012
Where: Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, Ohio

THE STORY: The San Antonio Spurs have won seven straight and will carry the league’s longest current winning streak into Cleveland on Tuesday to face the Cavaliers, who have dropped seven straight and own the league’s longest skid. Compounding Cleveland’s problems is Kyrie Irving’s right shoulder sprain, which could keep him out of his second game. Irving missed Saturday’s loss at New York and is expected to be a game-time decision. The Spurs are within 2½ games of Oklahoma City Thunder for the best record in the Western Conference.

We have Cavliers Vs Spurs Tickets still in stock.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Spurs), FS Ohio (Cavaliers)

ABOUT THE SPURS (36-14): Danny Green was the Cavaliers’ final roster cut at the end of training camp last season. Cleveland went on to win only 19 games, but Green latched on with the Spurs at the urging of assistant general manager Danny Ferry, who drafted him to the Cavaliers. Green is now the Spurs’ starting shooting guard while Manu Ginobili mends from a series of injuries. Green is flourishing in his third year in the league, averaging 8.4 points and 3.7 rebounds.

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (17-33): Cleveland has dropped 10 of its last 11 to fall out of the playoff race after they were only one game out of the eighth spot around the All-Star break. The Cavaliers signed Donald Sloan and Luke Hudson out of the Development League in recent weeks and both have become key members of the rotation. Sloan is starting in place of Irving and Hudson, signed Friday, is already playing big minutes as the reserve shooting guard.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson had surgery Monday to repair a torn tendon in his left foot and ankle. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.

2. Irving was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for March and has won the award in every month. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was named the Western Conference’s Coach of the Month.

3. The Spurs are 23-5 over the last two months, the best mark in the NBA.

PREDICTION: Spurs 95, Cavaliers 81

SPURS Vs TIMBERWOLVES 116,100 : Tim Duncan collected 21 points and 15 rebounds in 24 minutes as host San Antonio cruised despite losing Tony Parker early.

Gary Neal took over Parker’s spot and finished with 16 points and Stephen Jackson chipped in 16 on 6-of-9 shooting for the Spurs, who remain comfortably in second place in the West.

The Timberwolves lost for the sixth time in their last eight and fell 2½ games behind the Houston Rockets for the No. 8 spot in the Western Conference.

San Antonio did its best work at the start of each half, outscoring Minnesota 32-16 in the first quarter to set the tone. Duncan scored 10 points in the period while Jackson and Manu Ginobili added five apiece.

The Timberwolves got a few points back in the second quarter but still trailed 56-47 at the half and let it get out of hand in the third. The Spurs shot 65 percent in the frame as Duncan scored eight more points and San Antonio put the game away.
Kevin Love moved over to center with Nikola Pekovic out and recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds for Minnesota.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Timberwolves got 53 points off the bench, led by 18 and 11 assists from J.J. Barea. … San Antonio’s bench, led by Jackson and Neal, went for 59 points. … Minnesota, which ranks third in the NBA in rebounding, was dominated on the glass 56-41.

Analysis of the Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets are an underrated team this year, currently 20-17 and 2nd in their division only behind the Oklahoma City Thunder. They play an incredibly up-tempo style of offense that has led Denver to the #1 offense in the league this year so far. A poor defense (28th in the league) has been the Achilles heal of the team though and a big injury to their leading scorer, SF Danilo Gallinari, have caused the Nuggets to drop more games than they should have this season. If Denver can finish strong and get a 5th-7th seed out West they could surprise whichever team they’re matched up against and pull off a big upset.

Analysis of the San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs seem to consistently come out of nowhere and contend for the top seed in the tough Western Conference every year. Despite their best players being “too old” to still be effective in the league, the Spurs are 25-11 and 2nd overall in the West so far in 2012. They’ve won 13 of their last 15 games and went on an 11 game win streak as part of that great run. They have some tough games ahead (the Knicks, Clippers, Magic, Thunder, and Mavs coming up in the next 2 weeks), but if they can win the majority of these games the Spurs will earn a great seed in the playoffs and maybe make a run at another NBA Championship.

Key Players
Denver Nuggets: PG Ty Lawson
Lawson is an amazing player that always seems to make the right play, whether it be scoring or passing. The man averages almost 16 points a game and will be key this game due to his matchup against the All-Star PG Tony Parker of the Spurs. If Lawson can step up his defense, arguably his worst feature, the Nuggets may pull off the victory.

San Antonio Spurs: C Tim Duncan
There isn’t anyone that can match up against Duncan on the Nuggets squad (there rarely is on any team) and the Spurs will look to take advantage when they visit Denver on Sunday. If he can get a double-double (where the gets something like 20 points and 10 rebounds), the Spurs should win the battle down low easy and would be well on their way to a win.

Key Statistics
3-point field goal percentage:
Despite the Nuggets having the best offense in the country they don’t really shoot 3′s that well, only hitting 32.3% of their shots. San Antonio, on the other hand, hits 39.7% of their 3-pointers, good for 2nd in the country. If Denver can stop San Antonio from shooting that well and, on the other end, up their own percentage, it could mean a 10-point swing in favor of the Nuggets that would be enough for the win.

Prediction
The Spurs are so good and well rounded, while the Nuggets are fast, young, and high scoring. The two teams have conflicting styles of play, meaning the team that is able to both adapt to the other team as well as force their own style of play on their opponent will be the one to come out with the victory. I’ll take the more experienced team in that scenario any day of the week.

Prediction = San Antonio Spurs: 105 – Denver Nuggets: 90
